Light Novel Printing FAQs

Common questions from independent authors.

What is the recommended size for a Light Novel?

The US market typically prints light novels as digest size (5.5" x 8.5"), but we can do any size you prefer. The industry standard size for Japanese light novels is A6 (4.13 x 5.83 inches) or B6 (5.04 x 7.17 inches). We can print at all of these specifications, allowing your readers to experience the book exactly as intended.

Can I include color inserts in my light novel?

Yes! We are one of the only printers in North America that fully supports mixed media printing, including traditional Kuchi-e (口絵) color inserts. Instead of charging you full color pricing for the entire book, we will build a custom quote with separate pricing for your full-color inserts and your black & white text pages.

What paper should I use for a light novel?

For maximum readability and authenticity, we suggest using our 60lb or 80lb uncoated text stocks. These provide the perfect balance of opacity and thickness without making the final book too heavy, which is essential for text-heavy novels.

How do I ensure my cover fits properly?

Cover design can be tricky for thick books. We recommend building the spine after you build the final page count in the builder tool, as our system will calculate the exact spine width needed. However, if you already have your finished book, you can use our automated Book Spine Calculator to get the perfect dimensions for your cover art file.

What is the difference between printing a light novel and a standard novel?

While standard paperback novels focus primarily on text, Japanese light novels (ライトノベル) heavily feature anime or manga-style cover illustrations, specialized Kuchi-e color inserts, and intermittent black-and-white art throughout the chapters. Our presses are optimized to render both crisp typography and the high-resolution halftones required for these illustrations.

Can my light novel include black and white chapter illustrations?

Absolutely. Unlike standard text-heavy book printers that use low-end grayscale rendering, our presses use advanced halftone screening. This ensures that the black-and-white anime or manga style illustrations dispersed throughout your light novel print with sharp, high-contrast details without pixelation.

What is the minimum order quantity for independent authors?

We understand that independent authors and indie publishers may only need a handful of copies for a local anime convention, Kickstarter fulfillment, or beta reading. We have absolute zero minimum order quantities. You can print a single proof copy, or order hundreds of copies at wholesale tiered discounts.

Do you offer B2B print services for light novel localization publishers?

Yes. Many independent publishers and localization companies rely on us to print translated Japanese originals for the North American market. Whether you need a short run for market testing or a massive wholesale print run for retail distribution, we provide dedicated commercial production support scaled to your publishing company's specifications.

What is the difference between a Kuchi-e and a frontispiece?

While a frontispiece is a general Western publishing term for any illustration facing a title page, a Kuchi-e (口絵) is a historically Japanese formatting standard. In modern manga and light novels, Kuchi-e refers specifically to the high-quality, full-color inserts placed at the very beginning of the volume, printed on distinctly different glossy or silk paper compared to the uncoated black-and-white interior pages.
