Prepress Checklist for US Standard Manga (5.0" x 7.5") Files

Avoid production delays and unexpected reprints. Verify these 6 critical prepress criteria before uploading your print files.

01. 0.125" Bleed

Full Bleed Coverage

Every background color, splash art panel, and full-page illustration must extend completely to the 0.125" outer canvas border.

02. 0.250" Safe Margin

Safe Zone Clearance

All dialogue balloons, speech bubbles, page numbers, and vital art elements must sit at least 0.25" inside the trim boundary.

03. DPI Resolution

300 vs 600 DPI

Color images must be at least 300 DPI at 100% scale. Monochrome lineart and screentone manga should be prepared at 600 DPI.

04. Color Management

CMYK & Profiled RGB

Submit files in CMYK (GRACoL 2006 or SWOP) or sRGB with embedded color profiles. Ensure Total Area Coverage (TAC) is under 300%.

05. Black Inks

Rich vs Plain Black

Use 100% K for small text and dialogue to prevent color registration fringing. Use Rich Black (C:60 M:40 Y:40 K:100) for large dark fills.

06. Font Embedding

Outlines & Embedding

Convert all live typography to vector outlines (curves) or ensure all font subsets are 100% embedded within your exported PDF.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About US Standard Manga (5.0" x 7.5")

What is the standard trim size and bleed for US manga?

US manga standard trim size is 5.0" x 7.5" (127 x 190.5 mm). With the mandatory 0.125" bleed added to all four outer edges, the full document canvas size must be set to 5.25" x 7.75" (133.35 x 196.85 mm).

Should I draw my manga pages at 300 DPI or 600 DPI?

For black-and-white manga with screentones, we strongly recommend drawing at 600 DPI (3150 x 4650 px total canvas). At 600 DPI, halftones and screen tones render as crisp vector-like dots on digital presses without moiré or blurriness. For full-color manga, 300 DPI (1575 x 2325 px) is standard.

How much gutter margin should I leave for the spine?

For perfect-bound US manga, keep important dialogue and critical artwork at least 0.375" to 0.5" away from the inside binding gutter. This prevents text from disappearing into the book spine pinch.

What paper stocks does MCE Printing offer for US manga?

We offer 60lb, 80lb, and 100lb Uncoated Opaque interior text for authentic graphic novel feel, as well as 80lb and 100lb Silk/Gloss Text for vibrant full-color pages. Covers are printed on heavy 100lb Cardstock with protective Gloss or Matte lamination. We also offer split-media full-color front insert pages (kuchi-e).
